Hiding a Bald Head Under a Cap for 5 Years: His Norwood 7 Story

I’ll be upfront, when this guy first messaged me I could tell he’d been sitting on the idea for a long time. He’s from Coventry, late 20s, and by the time he found me his hair loss had reached a full Norwood 7. That’s the final stage on the scale, basically a thin ring of hair round the sides and back and nothing much on top.

It started in his early 20s, a little thinning at the temples that he told himself was “just the lighting”. A few years later it wasn’t the lighting. “Laur,” he told me in the chair, “I wore a cap for 5 years. Pubs, holidays, even to my mate’s wedding until his nan made me take it off. I hated photos and I hated bright bathroom lights even more.” He’d also spent a small fortune on shampoos and sprays that promised miracles. I told him straight that nothing in a bottle was going to bring back a Norwood 7 head of hair, and he laughed and said his wallet already knew.

He’d actually known about shaved look scalp micropigmentation for about 18 months before booking. What held him back was the hair tattoo horror stories online. Thick, dark, helmet looking hairlines that sit way too low, you’ve probably seen them. He’d even had a consultation with another artist who gave him the ick, all pressure and “book today or the price goes up”. He walked out and didn’t think about SMP again for months.

What brought him round was proof. He went through my reviews, my healed results and my studio videos, then messaged me. We met face to face first, and he said something I really liked: “I came in expecting a sales pitch and got a bloke telling me what SMP can’t do.” I’d told him it won’t grow hair, it won’t make a Norwood 7 look like a teenager and it needs a top up eventually. I’d rather lose a booking than oversell. A fresh 0.5 buzz cut is the goal, not a magic trick. If you want to know more about who I am and how I work, that’s all on my about page.

When it was done his family noticed a change. His mum asked if he’d lost weight (he hadn’t, his face just finally had a frame again) and his dad took a bit longer and said “you look like you’ve had a proper night’s sleep”. His mates assumed he’d just decided to go full buzz cut one day. I’ll take that as the highest compliment, because that’s exactly the point of a good hair tattoo.

Simply put, I place thousands of tiny dots of pigment into the top layer of your scalp. Each dot looks like a freshly shaved hair follicle from a distance. On a Norwood 7 that means covering the whole top, crown and temples, then blending it all into the hair you still have at the sides. It’s a hair tattoo in the sense that it’s pigment in skin, but it’s very different from a body tattoo in depth, size and colour.

Mostly trust and price. You deal with me directly, I show you real healed results (not just fresh ones) and you know the cost before you sit down. A lot of guys have also had a bad consultation somewhere else and want someone who’ll be honest about what’s realistic. Fixed £400 per session, no hidden extras, no hard sell.

Not if it’s done properly. The aim is for people to think you shaved your head by choice. Most clients get comments like “you look fresh” or “have you been on holiday”, not “have you had a tattoo?”. The softer and more gradual we build it, the less anyone notices a change.

⏱️ SMP Sessions, Healing Time & Downtime

Micropigmentation Sessions Completed 3 sessions (top, crown and hairline)
Session Duration Approx 4 hours for session 1, a bit shorter for sessions 2 and 3
Time Between SMP Sessions 2 weeks recommended, can be longer if life gets in the way
During the Healing Period No scabbing, no bleeding, no real pain. Some redness, maybe dry skin after a few days and a bit of itchiness
Work & Social Downtime Zero downtime. He booked mornings and went straight to his evening shift

3 Hair Tattoo Sessions, Zero Days Off Work

A Norwood 7 isn’t a one and done job. We build it in 3 layers, a bit like painting a wall, and nobody does the second coat before the first has dried. Session 1 took about 4 hours (yes, that’s a long time in one chair, so bring headphones, I can’t compete with your playlist). I kept it light on purpose. Lighter dots across the whole top to cover the scalp shine and give us a base to build on.

He picked weekday mornings and went to work in the evenings, which I always find funny because most people expect to need a week off. He didn’t tell a single person at work beforehand. After session 1 nobody said a word, which is exactly what I’d predicted, because the first pass is subtle. After session 2 a colleague asked if he’d been out in the sun. That’s the best reaction you can get, honestly, someone noticing a change and blaming it on the weather. By session 3 we’d tightened the density and finished the hairline, and sessions 2 and 3 were a bit quicker too.

I get asked a lot what healing feels like, so here’s the honest version. There’s no bleeding and no scabbing. Straight after a session your scalp looks a bit pink, like you’ve fallen asleep on a sunbed, and that usually fades in a day or so. Around day 3 or 4 it can feel a little dry or itchy as the skin renews itself. That’s it. In all my years doing this I’ve personally never had an infection case, though I’m not going to tell you the risk is literally zero, nothing that breaks the skin ever is. Follow the aftercare and you’re in very safe territory.

He told me before session 3 that he’d started taking his cap off on the way into the studio, then caught himself and laughed. “Old habits,” he said. I’ll say it too, that day he walked out with his head up and no hat. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

No. Most of my clients go back to work the same day or the next. The pigment sits in the upper layer of the skin, so recovery is quick and nothing you need to hide away for. Some guys like to book a day off just for peace of mind, and that’s fine, it’s personal preference rather than a requirement.

Not really. Because the density builds slowly over 3 sessions, 2 weeks apart, people just think you look healthier or better groomed. Nobody has ever pointed at a client and shouted “SMP!” across a pub. I’m still waiting for the first.

Totally up to you. Some guys tell the whole group chat from day one, others keep it quiet for years. Both are fine. This client was in the quiet camp at first, then told his closest mates once it had fully healed and they were more surprised that he’d kept it a secret than that he’d done it.

Facial symmetry mapping guide showing nose length versus forehead height for scalp micropigmentation hairline placement at Scalp Mates Birmingham

🎨 Natural Hairline Design & Mapping Rules

Hairline Style Choice Soft feathered hairline with a broken, natural edge
Frontal Placement Rule Placed a nose length above the nose at the midpoint, slightly raised at the corners
Temple Transition Feathered micro-dots blended into the side temporal peaks
Client Input Full control handed to me (“you’re the expert Laur”), with one small tweak at the temples

Why I Won’t Put Your Hairline Too Low (Golden Ratio Rules)

This is the part I care about most. When I was drawing his frontal hairline with the wax pencil he looked in the mirror and said, “I’m not going to say a word, you’re the expert.” Which I love, but it also means the pressure is on me. I mapped the Hairline a nose length above his nose and raised it slightly at the corners, following the natural lines of his forehead, so it matched his face and his age.

To be honest, most guys with a receded hairline know what they DON’T want (a hairline too low or too sharp). And the goal is to give you something that looks right at 28 and still looks right at 48. We checked it from every angle, he asked me to soften the temples just a touch during the first drawing. You can see more hairline tattoo results for short shaved heads on my results page if you’d like to compare different styles.

🧪 SMP Needle, Pigment & Studio Hygiene

Pigment Used to Colour Match Pure Organic Nocturnal Ink (medium shade), zero blue or green shift
Needle Configuration Sterile 0.22mm 3RL precision cartridge
Impressions / Dots Depth Approx 1.2mm to 1.5mm, upper dermis

Clean Studio, Fresh Needle, Pure Organic Nocturnal Ink

Not the sexiest topic, but the one I take most seriously. Everything I touch gets sterilised after every client. Your needle comes out of a sealed pack in front of you, your ink goes into a brand new cup and I wear fresh nitrile gloves, partly to keep things clean and partly to lower the chance of an allergic reaction. I also clean the scalp using simple water based baby wipes while I work. No harsh stuff on a freshly worked head.

For his fair skin and dark hair roots I went with a medium shade of Nocturnal Ink. I match the colour to your skin tone and to the shade of the hair you’ve still got, which is why a pale guy and a darker skinned guy never get the same pigment. It’s a pure organic ink, so over the years it fades towards a soft charcoal rather than turning blue or green. Nothing fades perfectly forever though, and that’s why I’ll talk about top ups in a minute.

It’s a very fine, sterile needle cartridge that makes tiny dots, not blobs. Small dots mean the result looks like real hair follicles on a shaved head, rather than a flat patch of ink. I open a fresh one for every client.

Around 1.2mm to 1.5mm, in the upper layer of the dermis. A traditional body tattoo goes deeper. That shallower depth is a big part of why the dots stay small and crisp instead of blurring together as time goes on.

I look at your skin tone, the colour of the hair at the sides and back and how dark your stubble looks when it’s freshly shaved. Then I choose a medium shade that sits between the two so it blends instead of standing out. If in doubt I go a touch lighter, because I can always add more but I can’t take it away.

💬 Is SMP Painful? Client Comfort Rating

Reported Pain Rating 3 out of 10
Most Sensitive Zone Temple corners and the front hairline edge
Numbing Required? None
Post-Session Sensation Mild sunburn feeling for around 4 to 6 hours

Client Quote: “Honestly Laur, I was bracing for the worst. It felt like an electric toothbrush tapping on my head. I nearly fell asleep in session 2, sorry about that.”

💡 Easy SMP Aftercare & Healing Guidelines

  • Hair Washing: Wait 3 days after each session, then wash gently for the first week.
  • Heavy Sweating / Workouts: Avoid sweating for 3 days. You can train straight away if it’s light and sweat free, and ease back into regular heavy workouts after that.
  • Swimming Pool / Sauna / Prolonged Sun: Stay away for 2 weeks.
  • Looking After It: Drink plenty of water, moisturise with a natural oil only if your scalp feels dry, avoid scratching for the short term and avoid getting sunburnt in the long term.

Why aftercare is easy: Compared with a hair transplant, with its scalp incisions, swelling and weeks of careful recovery, SMP aftercare fits around normal life with very little fuss.

What’s Really Happening to Your Scalp While It Heals?

Think of it like a very light graze. Each tiny dot goes into the upper layer of your skin, so your body treats it as a minor surface irritation. That’s why you get a bit of redness at first, then a dry or itchy patch a few days later as the skin renews itself. Nothing is being cut out, nothing is stitched and there’s no open wound to look after. It’s closer to a light sunburn than anything else.

Obviously, nothing is risk free. The very small risks with SMP are a mild skin reaction or, if you scratch and ignore the aftercare, a small chance of irritation. In my studio I’ve never had an infection, and most of that comes down to good hygiene and clients following simple instructions. Compare that with a surgical hair transplant, where you’re dealing with swelling, a scabbed scalp and months before you see results. Or a big body tattoo, which can sting for days. SMP is much gentler than both.

A hair transplant involves surgery, swelling, scabbing and a long wait to see the final result. Scalp micropigmentation has no cutting, no bandages and no painkillers, and most people are back to normal life pretty much straight away. It’s a very different kind of procedure, and neither is “better” for everyone, but if you want a quick recovery the SMP route wins easily.

You can wash your head after 3 days, gently, for about a week. Light workouts that don’t make you sweat are fine straight away, and you can get back to proper heavy sessions once the first 3 days are up. Pools and saunas need to wait for 2 weeks.

🪒 Shaved Head Maintenance: How to Keep Your SMP Looking Sharp

Recommended Shaving Tool Electric foil shaver (e.g. Wahl Final Cut or Pitbull)
Target Hair Length 0.2mm to 0.4mm, keeps the 3D hair texture blended with the SMP dots
Shaving Frequency Every 2 to 3 days, a 5 minute morning routine
Alternatives Wet shave with a razor every 1 to 2 days, or a clipper on a 0.5 buzz cut, trimmed every 2 to 3 days

Keep Your Shaved Look Under 0.5mm (Or It Gets Obvious)

This is the bit people forget. SMP is flat. Your remaining hair is 3D. Once the hair at the sides grows past about 0.5mm, the two start to look different under bright light, a bit like a printed photo next to a real plant. A foil shaver every 2 to 3 days takes about 5 minutes and keeps everything looking like one smooth buzz cut. If you prefer a wet shave, that works great too. And if you’d rather keep a little length, a trimmer set to 0.5 is fine, you’ll just need to go over it more often. My complete shaved head SMP guide goes into more detail on this.

Scalp Micropigmentation Cost: Straight Answers, No Games

Let’s talk money, because I know it’s the thing most of you scroll down to first. For a treatment like his, a full Norwood 7 with the top, crown and hairline, you’d be looking at £1,200 in 2026, which is £400 per session across 3 sessions. You pay after each session, by bank transfer or cash. That’s it. I don’t do upfront contracts or in-house finance. You’re welcome to put it on a credit card and manage it with your bank, but I honestly wouldn’t suggest going into debt for this. If it’s not comfortable now, wait until it is.

Price was one of the first things my client brought up. He’d had one other consultation and left feeling uneasy, because the quote was a lot higher and he was told it would go up if he didn’t book that day. That made him suspicious. My price felt fair to him and he met me in person before making his mind up, which counted for more than any review. He wasn’t struggling financially, but he told me he doesn’t like feeling rushed into spending money.

A quick word on discounts, because I get asked from time to time. Sorry, but no cash discounts, student discounts, nurse discounts or “pretty please” discounts. It wouldn’t be fair on the guys who pay full price. I also can’discount for promises of bringing in more clients. But if you’re confident you can send people my way, you pay full price and I’ll pay you a 10% commission on each session they pay.

And I’ll tell you now, I’ll never make excuses to charge you for more initial sessions. If you need a touch up after the full 3 sessions, it’s free. If it’s faded considerably in the first year, also free. That’s my price promise. A top up is usually due after 2 to 4 years. Some guys go earlier, some later, and it never costs more than a first session. A light refresh is considerably less. Have a look at the full SMP cost breakdown for the UK if you want to compare.

Why Guys Travel From Coventry for a Hair Tattoo

He told me the drive was never a problem, and I hear that a lot. A few of my clients travel an hour or more. What matters to them is trust. He’d found me on Instagram first, watched a few of my healed result videos on YouTube and then a mate from his five-a-side team had actually mentioned me in passing. When two different places point towards the same person, you start to listen. Take a look at my about page if you’re wondering who you’d be sitting in front of.

“Laur is a true artist! I have had people look at me from extremely close and be in awe at the fact that my hairline isn’t entirely made up of real hair. My only regret is not getting SMP years ago and waiting this long. I spent so long researching and speaking to various providers, and honestly – Scalp Mates produced the best results, and were the most honest, understanding, and professional out of everyone. I would personally never risk going anywhere else, knowing what excellent quality and value you can get here.”
