Long Hair Density SMP for Thinning Crown & Top Scalp (3 Sessions) | Scalp Mates Birmingham
⚠️ Quick Heads-Up: Post-Session Look & Washing
Right after a session on longer hair, your scalp and surrounding hair might look quite dark or even a bit smudged.
Don’t panic! That extra darkness is just surface pigment clinging to your hair strands. Once you do your initial post-care and take your first few gentle showers, all that surface ink washes right away. You’ll be left with clean, lighter micro-dots sitting neatly in the skin that blend naturally with your real hair.
The Client’s Story: Keeping His Long Hair While Fixing the Thinning Top
If you’ve been rocking longer hair for years, the thought of buzzing it all off just to tackle a thinning crown can feel pretty daunting. That’s exactly where our client was at. In his mid-30s and working a busy job, he’d worn his hair medium-to-long for over a decade. But as the hair around his crown and top scalp started thinning out, bright office lights and sunshine began showing way more scalp than he was comfortable with.
He spent around eight months researching different options before realizing that getting a tattoo for thinning hair could give him the appearance of thick, full hair without having to touch a pair of clippers. When he came down to Scalp Mates from Leicester for his consultation, we sat down and talked through real expectations: while SMP doesn’t grow new hair, placing micro-dots beneath his existing locks completely cuts down that bright skin reflection.
As for the treatment itself? He described the feeling as a gentle 2 out of 10 on the pain scale—more like a light tapping sensation than anything uncomfortable!

How Long Hair SMP Works (And Keeping Expectations Real)
Working a tattoo for thinning hair through longer locks takes a careful touch. Because we’re working around live strands of hair, we manually part the hair row by row to place pigment right where the scalp is showing through.
We always like to keep things 100% honest when it comes to density treatments on longer hair:
- Cutting Down Contrast: Scalp micropigmentation works by darkening the pale skin beneath thinned hair. Once you remove that stark contrast between light scalp and dark hair strands, your hair instantly looks way thicker from every normal angle.
- The Overhead Light Reality: Where real hair is very sparse (like a heavily thinned crown), 2D dots can’t completely replace missing 3D hair strands under harsh, direct vertical lighting. As you can see in the overhead photos, while skin show-through is massively reduced, a thinned crown will naturally look slightly softer than areas with full hair growth.
Clinical Insight: Pushing too much ink into a thin crown to force an artificially dark result can leave you with an unnatural, blotchy look. By building shade depth gradually across 3 sessions, we achieved a soft, natural background tone that blends smoothly into his real hair.

Step-by-Step Session Breakdown
As you can see in the 6-panel progression grid, building density under long hair is all about layering:
Session 1: The Base Shade
We carefully parted his hair and scattered initial micro-impressions using a lighter charcoal pigment. This built our foundational shade and immediately took away the bright scalp reflection.
Session 2: Building Density
Two weeks later, we tightened the spacing between dots across the top and crown. Adding this second layer gave the entire area much richer visual depth.
Session 3: Final Touches & Blending
In the final session, we fine-tuned the crown perimeter and made sure the transition into his natural hair density looked seamless. Now, he can style his hair every morning without worrying about bright lights exposing his scalp!

Got Questions? (FAQs for Long Hair Density)
Do I need to shave or trim my hair before getting density SMP?
Not at all! If you have reasonable hair coverage and just want to fix diffuse thinning, you can keep your hair at whatever length you like. We simply part your hair as we work to deposit pigment directly onto the skin.
Will a tattoo for thinning hair damage my existing hair?
Nope, not at all. SMP needles only go into the very upper layer of skin (about 1 to 2 mm deep). Your natural hair follicles live much deeper in the dermal layer (around 4 to 5 mm), so the procedure doesn’t affect your natural hair growth in any way.
How many sessions will I need for long hair density?
Density treatments can take up to 3 sessions spaced about 10 to 14 days apart. Layering the pigment over multiple visits keeps the results looking soft, natural, and perfectly blended. If you’re happy with the result after the first or 2nd session you can simply stop there.
